From the Winery’s Blurb:
Swedenburg Winery is located on Historic Valley View Farm (c. 1762). Wayne and Juanita Swedenburg, came to this farm in 1978, both on the heels of retirement from government service. Along with their son Marc, the Swedenburgs planted the entire vineyard, mostly by hand, sometimes by the light of the family pickup truck at night! After many years of hard work, the family enjoyed the first “crush” in 1987, and have been producing fine wines ever since!
We open the tasting room and invite guests to come and experience the wines along with the beauty of Virginia. The family wants our visitors to enjoy themselves while at the winery and its tasting room. We recently installed tables for our guests that have purchased wines and choose to enjoy a glass or so.

Our Visit:
|
We visited Swedenberg Estate Vineyard on 3 October 2010. The drive to Swedenburg shows off the best of Virginia horse country; rambling old stone and timber houses, towering Dutch barns, rolling hills and wood fences. After a visit to the winery, backtrack a mile to Middleburg for a bowl of Virginia peanut soup or fish and chips at the Red Fox Inn. Swedenburg is one of Virginia’s earliest wineries, with a first crush in 1987, and it’s still the sentimental favorite of many. Juanita Swedenburg, who passed away in 2007, was a key figure in changing legislation that barred wineries from shipping direct to out-of-state customers. The simple tasting room holds a half dozen or so at the bar, to sample the winery’s Chardonnay, Riesling, Seyval Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir. The real attraction is Swedenburg’s perfect picnic lawn, a vast green blanket that rolls out for acres. If you’ve gotten too creaky for a picnic in the grass, you’ll find a few picnic tables, too. Pets welcome; bus and RV parking available with reservations; group tours available. |
