From the Winery’s Blurb:

When you live by the firm belief that “wine is made in the vineyard,” you come to realize that selecting the right vineyard site, and carefully tending the vines, are the most important things we do here at Rappahannock Cellars. Thus our estate vineyard is our “goose that lays the golden egg,” so to speak.

Our estate vineyard at Rappahannock Cellars is commonly known as the “Glenway Vineyard,” as it’s located on the historic Glenway Farm in Rappahannock County (circa 1804.) We strive to grow the highest quality grapes in Virginia, while at the same time being environmentally sensitive to the land, and leaving the smallest possible footprint on our farm. We are keenly aware that not only do we derive our livelihood from this land, but we also live and raise our children on it.

The results of selecting such a great site, paying extremely close attention to the vineyard, and “babying” each vine, has lead to a consistent pattern of incredible fruit quality each and every year. Growing wine is science; growing great wine is an art …so cheers to the Artist!

Our Visit:

We visited Rappahannock Cellars on 2 October 2010. Rappahannock Cellars sits protected in a valley, encircled by mountains, lending a feeling of intimacy to the grounds. Families spill out from picnic tables and couples snuggle on the lawn leading up to the ranch-style winery building.

Inside, one or more members of the Delmar family may be among the black-clad pourers at the tasting bar, where elegant glasses are switched out between whites and reds, and free pours of natural spring water from the property are offered.

The sprawling wine-making family (including all 12 kids) moved their operation from California to Virginia in 1999, bringing their vintage 1906 vines with them. At last count, eleven varieties of grapes were growing on more than 20 acres, producing more than a dozen wines. One of the winery’s more unusual bottlings is the Solera, a non vintage wine made from Vidal Blanc in the style of Spanish sherry.

A fantastic old barn next door serves as an event space for private parties. Tasting room reservations are required for tours and groups of 8 or more.

Directions:
From Washington, D.C., I-66 W to Exit 27, left at the exit, then an immediate right onto Rt. 647 for 4 mi., right on Rt. 635 for 11 mi. The winery is on the right.
