Our Visit:
We visited Philip Carter on 18 July. Here’s a link to Nancy’s post on our visit.

Philip Carter Winery (formerly Stillhouse Vineyards) is an enthusiastic participant in Virginia’s wine industry, and the landscape has been part of the state’s wine history since the mid-1700s. The winery bills itself as “The First Family of American Wines,” and shares its story through displays throughout its tasting room and new banquet hall.

Visit and you’ll see why Charles Carter might have picked this location. The layered Blue Ridge views laid out for miles are majestic and enduring. It’s easy to imagine ladies gathered on the lawn for a garden party, or Carter and his cronies gathered for a glass of wine from Cleve Hall Plantation on a cool fall evening.

Today, you can choose from estate-grown Chardonnay (particularly good) or Cabernet Franc, or opt for a much-awarded Governor Fauquier white blend, dry Rosé; Meritage, or the Bordeaux-style Cleve. Or, as the tasting room manager suggested, a glass of the Late Harvest Vidal with a bit of Stilton blue cheese and some sliced pear – a pairing that reminds us that food and wine, also, can be majestic and enduring.

The Wines: When we visited, the winery was tasting …

Chardonnay; Governor Fauquier (100% Vidal Blanc); Danielle’s Rosé (Tinta Cão); Cabernet Franc; Meritage (Philip Carter does it as Cab Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cab Sauvignon); Cleve (blend of Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, and Cab Sauvignon); and Late Harvest Vidal (Vidal Blanc).
