Our Visit:

We visited Narmada Winery on 18 July. Here’s a link to Nancy’s post on our visit.

“Poised for greatness” is the phrase that came to mind as we left Narmada Winery in Amissville.

All photos from this winery

Maybe it was the unassuming nature of the owner and winemaker, Sudha, and her co-owner husband, Pandit, and the way they made us feel welcome and cared for. Or the savory smells wafting from the winery’s small plates of samosas, biryani, and chicken tikka. Or possibly the grandness of the tasting room, with its wall of windows, curved bar, the dozen high-top tables perfect for taking in the live music.

It’s an ambitious enterprise, already offering 11 wines with less than a year under its belt. An overproduction of Chambourcin has the winery offering three different styles of 100% Chambourcin wines – an interesting opportunity to see how wildly different a varietal can taste, depending on how the wine is produced. Guests are loving the Viognier, the Mom (Chardonel/Vidal), and the Dream (Traminette).

Narmada Winery is named after Pandit’s mother, in honor of the sacrifices she made to send Pandit to the United States to study, many years ago. Narmada is no longer with us, but her winery will be, for a long time.

Narmada is part of the new Artisanal Wineries of Rappahannock County wine trail.

The Wines: When we visited, the winery was tasting …

Chardonnay; Viognier; Mom (Chardonel/Vidal blend); Dream (Traminette); Lotus (Vidal Blanc); Gulabi Rose (Merlot); Reflection (Chambourcin); Melange (Cab Sauvignon and Merlot blend); Cab Franc; Midnight (Chambourcin); and Primita (Chambourcin).
