Our Visit:
We visited Mediterranean Cellars on 11 October 2010.

Open since 2003, Mediterranean Cellars is owned by Louis Papadopoulos, his wife Katy, and their family. Louis’ winemaking began in 1961, in the Kiffissia suburb of Athens, Greece. He made traditional Greek wines on a forty-acre farm in Corinth, alongside lemon, orange, and apricot groves.

By 1984, the family had relocated to Northern Virginia, and Mediterranean Cellars was born. The wine choices are very Virginia, with the exception of Rechina, an Athenian staple, but milder for the American audience.

The warm, wood-paneled tasting room makes you feel at home, with window seating overlooking the vineyards. In the back, through French doors, is a romantic barrel room used for private events. A landscaped front porch has a view with a little bit of everything: horses grazing, a green barn, an old silo, and a big white farmhouse. Picture perfect.

Kid and pets welcome; bring your picnic; group tours available.

The Wines: When we visited, the winery was tasting …

Chardonnay, Vidal Blanc, Rechina (milder than the Greek version), Viognier, Merlot, Chambourcin, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, a variety of roses and dessert wines, and Mejortage, the winery’s take on Meritage.
