From the Winery’s Blurb:
Experience a Revolution in Virginia Wine that is driven by the dedication to handcraft wines made only from grapes that have proven themselves, and not those popularized by other regions. Hillsborough Vineyards is a family owned vineyard and winery specializing in the small batch production of complex wines that are in harmony with the terroir of Virginia.
Offering a rare combination of exceptional wines, incomparable ambiance, and unsurpassed hospitality, it is no surprise that most people discover Hillsborough Vineyards through word-of-mouth recommendations.
Come and taste what the Revolution is all about.

Our Visit:

We visited Hillsborough Vineyards on 19 September 2010.

Bring your camera to Hillsborough Vineyards – it’s made for pictures. Acres of vineyards leading up to the Blue Ridge provide the cinematic backdrop, and the covered stone patio is the perfect perch to drink it all in. Weathered Adirondack chairs dot the property in cozy, romantic pairs. In colder months, settle in by the tasting room’s fireplace.

The crowds have gotten so big here that tastings are now held in a country French-looking dining room on busy weekends. We loved it: seated like humans instead of elbowing up to a bar; nibbling off a tasting plate of cheese and chocolate ($5); talking as long as we liked with the pouring staff, who showed up when our glasses emptied.

Hillsborough’s vineyards are planted with grapes of French origin, including Fer Servadou, Petit Verdot, Tannat, Petit Menseng, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon. Wines are named for gem stones: Garnet is the award-winning Bordeaux-style blend; the well-regarded Bloodstone combines Fer Servadou, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tannat.

The winery accommodates private parties and weddings. No limos or buses on Saturdays; please make reservations on other days.

The Wines: When we visited, the winery was tasting …

Carnelian, a Rousanne/Chardonnay blend, a 100% Petit Manseng called Opal, Serefina, a rosé blend of Viognier and Tannat, the Bordeaux blend called Garnet, two red blends featuring Tanat and Fer Servadou called Ruby and Bloodstone, Onyx, the 100% Tannat, and a late harvest Viognier called Moonstone.
