Historic Buena Vista Plantation, circa 1835, on Virginia’s Northern Neck is home to The Hague Winery, a small family business owned by Cynthia and Stephen Madey.
The tasting room is housed in a former barn overlooking the manor home, outbuildings, vineyards and surrounding farmland. Take a step back in time and visit this peaceful setting while enjoying some of the Northern Neck’s finest wine.

In 2000, Stephen and Cynthia Madey purchased historic Buena Vista farm – now The Hague Winery – on the Northern Neck and spent the next eight years renovating the main house and farm buildings, some dating back to the 1700s. Framed with chestnut logs taken from local trees, Buena Vista was solidly built by Colonel Thomas Brown in the 1830s for his wife, Sarah Lee Cox, second cousin to Robert E. Lee.

Fast forward a bunch of years, through the Madeys’ growing and selling their grapes commercially, deciding to open a winery, and then hauling eight tons of grapes down to Michael Shaps at Virginia Wineworks for their inaugural bottling, and you arrive at 2009, with their first release of Cabernet Franc, Rosé, Chardonel and a Muscat dessert wine.

Of course, as every winery owner knows, that’s when the real work started.

Today, the Madeys welcome locals and weekenders to their sunny tasting room in the old barn (you’d never recognize it). A wall of windows looks out on a green lawn, and a covered patio (with a second tasting bar) offers a chance to reflect on General Lee, the role of the Northern Neck in the country’s history, and how wine makes everything just a little bit more interesting.

The Wines: On our last visit, the winery was tasting …

Chardonel, Rose, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Meritage Reserve, Petit Verdot, and the elegant Cynthia Dessert wine.

Driving Directions

From Richmond, take I-64 East to Exit 192 (US 360) for 43 miles, RIGHT onto US 360/Queen Street and follow for 6.6 miles, LEFT on Rte. 3 in Warsaw and left again on Rte. 3 for 2.5 miles, RIGHT on Rte. 203 for 7.5 miles and left on Rte. 202 for four miles. Winery is on left.

From Washington D.C., take Rte. 5 South through Maryland to Rte. 301. Head south for 38 miles, crossing the Potomac onto the Northern Neck, LEFT onto Rte. 3 East for 26 miles, LEFT on Rte. 202 for eight miles to winery on right.
