From the Winery’s Blurb:
A visit to Gray Ghost offers a knowledgeable staff, southern hospitality, beautiful picnic grounds and spacious indoor facilities. Ask about Gray Ghost’s famous winery events, entertaining tours and the most popular volunteer harvest program in the state!

Gray Ghost, a family owned and operated winery, is placing Virginia on the international wine map by producing internationally acclaimed wines from immaculate vineyards. All grapes are hand-picked and wine is aged in premium oak barrels. Full-bodied reds are unfiltered and lighter-styled wines are fermented at lower temperatures to enhance fruit character. This emphasis on quality resulted in Gray Ghost being named “Best of the East” by Vineyard and Winery Management Magazine four consecutive years!

Our Visit:

We last visited Gray Ghost on 11 October 2010.

Gray Ghost has been doing everything right for nearly 20 years – growing their vineyards, their winery, and their customer relationships slowly but surely.

All photos from this winery

As some big and fast-moving Virginia newcomers go under, Gray Ghost just keeps chugging along, getting a little better every year, and building massive loyalty along the way – they claim the most popular volunteer harvest program in the state.

The once-humble tasting room you may remember has been transformed into a vast hall with a long bar, and a big secret upstairs: the spacious, Federal-style Mosby’s Lounge, with groupings of leather couches and cocktail tables – plus an upstairs deck – for hanging out with friends, reading, or – why not? – napping.

Outside, choose between chairs on the lawn, the gazebo, or the garden for your picnic. Wines include the five red Bordeaux grapes, plus five whites, and the much-awarded Adieu, a late harvest Vidal Blanc.

Private Parties and weddings up to 50 people are welcome, with plenty of room for bus and RV parking; group tours available – please call ahead; light snacks in the wine shop.

The Wines: When we visited, the winery was tasting …

Chardonnay, Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, Victorian White (a Chardonnay with some residual sugar), Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, the Bordeaux blend Ranger Reserve, and the semi-dry Victorian Red. Don’t miss Gray Ghost’s very popular dessert wine, Adieu.
