In the cellar, we utilize traditional methods to craft our wines. Our whites are whole clustered pressed and then barrel fermented in a combination of new and older French oak barrels. We use commercial yeast strains (primarily French) for primary fermentation and inoculate to promote malolactic (simetimes called secondary) fermentation.
Delaplane Cellars is perched on romantic Lost Mountain, and views from the tasting room cast a spell of quiet. The romance won’t be interrupted by big, loud crowds, either – no large groups (more than six), buses or limos accepted.
The vibe is cool and calm as you pass through the 8-foot high, solid walnut doors into the tasting room. Neutral decor sets up the centerpiece: a wall of sky-high windows bringing in the rolling mountain and vineyard views.
Owners Jim and Betsy Dolphin wanted four things in a winery, and surveyed more than 100 sites in search of that perfect combination: an excellent vineyard site for red wine grapes; a dynamite view; easy access to a major road; and a community of wineries. After a multi-year search, their vision is paying off: Delaplane Cellars is creating lots of buzz among Northern Virginia wine travelers.
Wines are outstanding, with layers of flavor and the promise of even better things to come after cellaring. Light fare is available (sausages, cheese, hummus, bread), plus occasional specials, like the pumpkin soup and Santa Fe shrimp flatbread when we visited last.
Hang-out spots include window tables in the tasting room and a sunny side deck. A big indoor fireplace and more outside seating – to accommodate the growing fan base – are in the plans.
Winery accepts private parties; pets welcome on leash, outside; smoking only in designated area; veterans, active members of the armed forces, police officers and fire fighters receive a 15% discount on all wine purchases.
