From the Winery’s Blurb:

In Introduction to Poetry, poet Billy Collins laments his students’ inclination to forego the pleasures of poetry and instead try to “tie the poem to a chair with rope and torture a confession out of it.” I think we all know some folks who want to approach wine in a similar fashion.

At Cardinal Point, we take great pride in creating high quality, delicious, and food-friendly wines. But we take the most pleasure in creating wines that put a smile on our customers’ faces, and that inspire the chef in all of us to achieve the perfect pairing of wine and food. So when you arrive at Cardinal Point, although we will answer all of your questions about our wines, technical and otherwise, don’t forget the most important question is the simple one to ask yourself: “Do I enjoy this wine?”

Tasting / Visiting Hours: (from the winery’s website)

Open every day from 11:00am to 5:30pm. Cardinal Point is closed on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Tastings are offered at the bar during normal business hours for $5 per person. Your tasting fee will be discounted against your purchase.

Our Visit:

Cardinal Point’s winemaker, Tim Gorman, was featured in the 2010 documentary about Virginia wine, “”Vintage: The Winemaker’s Year.” One of his very memorable quotes shared the challenge of growing wine in Virginia.

“”It can be really, really hot, and when it’s not hot it can be torrential rain. You’re fighting disease from mildew. You’re battling deer. You’re battling insects. The price of diesel’s gone through the roof. I mean, it’s probably as big a headache as you can sign up for.”

And yet, Cardinal Point keeps dodging the bullet(s) and making really good wine.

The tasting room is an intimate, casual spot with a small bar and a few chairs in a nondescript gray building surrounded by elaborate plantings of ferns and daisies, lamb’s ear and roses, lavender and more. A pergola-covered patio welcomes guests on fair-weather days.

Private parties welcome; pets and kids okay; group tours available; parking for buses/RVs; snacks for purchase.

Wines include Chardonnay, Riesling, Viognier, A6 (a Viognier/Chardonnay Blend), Quattro (a Rielsing, Gewurtztraminer, Traminette, Viognier blend) and reds such as Cabernet Franc, Cab. F. + Vio (Cabernet Franc & Viognier blend), CS+PV+CF (Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Cab Franc), plus a dessert-style Cab Franc.
