From the Winery’s Blurb:

In 2006 Sharon and Brian Roeder moved to the Blue Ridge foothills on the rural side of Northern Virginia. There, working closely with their trusted yet loopy Golden Retrievers, Barley and Justice the Wonderpuppy, they have initiated their diabolical plot to wean visitors from their “crack-berries” and extraordinarily long commutes by providing them with idyllic and pastoral tranquility in the cooling foothills of the Piedmont Mountains. Spreading their joyful and grapey evil far and wide, they have created a veritable den of wine pleasures designed to trap everyone under the spell of their extraordinary patio views and whimsically-built winery. The wine ain’t that bad either.

Join them on the fun side of life and enjoy extraordinary wines and views with people certain to become fast friends around a shared picnic patio on the patio.

Tasting / Visiting Hours: (from the winery’s website)

Tasting fee $6 for reds, $6 for whites, or $10 for both. Open 11-6 every day and till 9pm on Fridays.

Our Visit:

“Standard fare at wineries now are stylish tasting rooms and at least a modest outdoor space to enjoy a glass of wine. But a number of Virginia winery owners are expanding their vision beyond wine production, crafting an additional role for themselves as entertainment providers.

Barrel Oak is among these forward-looking multi-taskers. Open 7 days a week year ’round – including a late night every Friday – Barrel Oak wants to be your first choice for a Friday night wind-down after a tough week in the office.

Once you unpack, your first stop is one of two tasting bars. It’s a tough choice: inside the bright and spacious barn-style tasting room? Or outside, on the sprawling patio with the killer mountain views? You can sample just reds or just whites ($6), or both ($10); varietally, there’s something for everyone.

Grab a picnic table on the grass, pop the cork, and spend a lazy afternoon. Or linger into the evening, which is when the firepits come out on cool nights.

Groups are welcome; eight or more should call for a tasting reservation. Friday nights and Sundays usually feature free live music.

At the winery: weddings & private parties; picnic areas and outdoor patio; light snacks; group tours (call in advance); kids and pets welcome (on leash).

The wines include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Concord, Merlot, Norton, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc, Seyval, and Touriga.

The Winery’s Driving Directions

Barrel Oak says, “We tower over I-66 between exits 27 & 23. If you don’t see the big yellow building you probably shouldn’t be driving!”
