From the Winery’s Blurb:
Athena Vineyards was established in 2002 by three Nurses. We enjoy healthy lifestyles, working in the vineyard and the finer things in life. Our interest in winemaking led to the construction of our winery in 2005. Athena has become the first commercial vineyard and winery in Northumberland County, Virginia. Visit our tasting room and share our warm hospitality in a beautiful vineyard setting. Our vineyards overlook the Great Wicomico River with 15 acres of over a 20 varieties of grapes. Not far from the Chesapeake Bay, we embrace the lifestyle of the area – crabs, rockfish and oysters are common in the region.
Tasting / Visiting Hours: (from the winery’s website)
Tasting fee $3. Open Wednesday – Sunday Noon – 6PM (January through May Noon to – 5PM)
Three women – all nurses – started Athena Vineyards in 2002 and built the winery in 2005. On the banks of the Great Wicomico River on the Northern Neck of Virginia, Athena grows an ambitious 20 varieties of grapes on their 15 acres.
Spicy woodland smells greet you as you walk up the path of the winery building. A large wrap-around porch with white Adirondack chairs provides a nice perch if you decide to stay awhile.
Athena’s wines stand out in their distinctive bottles, such as the caravel-shaped Galleon Treasure Red, and the Sweet Notes Red guitar bottle. Great holiday gifts.
At the winery: Group tours (call in advance for 10 or more); private parties; buses/RVs welcome; kids welcome; pets welcome; places to picnic; weddings
The Wines: When we visited, the winery was tasting …
Athena’s White (Vidal blanc and Seyval blanc blend); Chardonnay; Nightingale Chardonnay; Athena’s Lightouhse White (blend of Seyval Blanc and other white grapes); Athena’s Rose (blend); Cabernet Franc; Galleon Treasure Red (“a distinctive blend of Nightingale Red and Cabernet Franc”); Cabernet Sauvignon; Meritage (Athena does it as a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc, and Petit Verdot); Sweet Notes (“blend of sweet red wine”); Safe Harbor (fortified Chambourcin in a Port style, but with shorter barrel aging); Athena’s Sweet White (blend); Mellow Notes (fortified Vignoles wine in Port style).
