Our Visit:
We visited Afton Mountain on 26 September 2010.
At the end of your long climb to the top of Afton Mountain, you’ll probably expect to find a cabin, or lodge, or eagle’s nest maybe. So the Mediterranean-style winery buildings may cause a double take (“is THAT the winery?”).
Inside, the surprises continue: it’s as if you’ve entered a sumptuous living room, with high, beamed ceilings, elaborate chandeliers, and dramatic floor-to-ceiling drapes. And all that BEFORE you take in the spectacular, mountain-top view from the hillside deck.
It may take a minute to realize your glass hand is empty, but once you do, the busy tasting bar will serve up some nice wines, including a vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon from 30-year old vines.
Snacks available; groups of six should call in advance; no limos or group reservations after 4:00 on weekends; no buses, campers, or RVs unless previously arranged; pets are welcome at picnic tables or other outdoor spaces.
The Wines: When we visited, the winery was tasting …
Tete du Cuvee (white sparkling wine of pinot noir and chardonnay, made in the traditional Champagnois style), gewurztraminer, chardonnay, pinot noir, sangiovese, Mountain White (sweet blend of chardonnay, riesling and vidal blanc), Mountain Rose (sweet rose blend of red grapes), and Pentola d’Oro (sweet desert-style blend of gewurztraminer and muscat).
The library of photos for the iPhone App (and the slideshows on these pages) is constantly growing as we visit wineries around the state. All original photography by Rick Collier is available for sale or license. View the collection at:
