From the Winery’s Blurb:

We are a small Virginia Farm Winery located in Abingdon on the far southwest side of Virginia near the Tri-Cities of Bristol, Johnson City and Kingsport, TN. We acquired 53 acres of land in this beautiful area and thought we would do something to keep us healthy, active and creating something.

We began planning our 10 acre vineyard in 1997; planted our first 500 plants in 1998 and completed our 6000 plants by 2001. Our main grape varieties are: Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Chardonel, Traminette, Pinot Noir, Norton, Chambourcin, Viognier. Our first fermentation began with our year 2000 harvest.

Tasting / Visiting Hours: (from the winery’s website)

No tasting fee. Open Tues – Sat, 10am-6pm, and Sundays, 12-6pm between March 15 and December 15.

The Visit by Virginia Wines In My Pocket:

“Seven miles outside of the charming southwestern Virginia town of Abingdon you’ll find the Abingdon Vineyard Winery, a rustic, riverside place to settle in for an afternoon. Or take a hike and then come by for a taste; the town of Damascus, just five miles away, hosts the intersection of five different hiking trails, including the Appalachian Trail.

The winery is tucked into the woods along the south fork of the Holston River, and as you sit on the patio outside the tasting room, all you can hear is the water bubbling over the rocks, and maybe a dog barking up the hill.  All you can see are trees.

Inside the large tasting room, you’ll be there awhile if you decide to sample everything on offer; at last count, Abingdon made two dozen wines, including Chardonnay, Chardonel, Viognier, Riesling, several semi-dry and sweet white blends, plus a White Pinot Noir, several different styles of blush wines, and reds including Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Chambourcin, Norton, and a number of blends ranging from dry to very sweet.

Be sure to stop in Abingdon – or spend the night. It’s a friendly, walkable town with lots of history, and the Virginia Creeper trail (just 1/2 mile from the winery) is perhaps the coolest bike trail in the state. Hire a shuttle, start at the top, and hold on!

At the winery: Snacks available; group tours (call for reservations); picnic spots; parking available for buses and RVs; and Lady, a border collie with a serious Frisbee fetish.

Directions:
Please note that the Google mapping feature may be incorrect. To find Abingdon Winery, take exit 19 from I-81 onto US58 east towards Damascus. Go 5 miles to route 722 [Osceola Rd] and turn right. Proceed 2.4 miles along the yellow stripped road, turn right into the driveway just after a clockwise, hairpin turn.”

The Winery’s Driving Directions:

From I-81 in Virginia take exit 19. Proceed east toward Damascus on US-58 for 5 miles. Take a right on route 722 [Oseola Rd] and proceed 2.4 miles following the yellow stripped road. The winery will be just after a sharp hairpin turn; driveway is on the right. Route 722 will have become route 710 or Alvarado Rd. Look for the grape cluster signs beginning at US-58 and 722 to lead you in.

(Some wineries offer their own driving directions, which are often better than those available from Google Maps or Mapquest once you leave the highways and major roads and begin to approach the winery’s tasting rooms. Where the winery provides directions, they will be provided here.)
