Spotsylvania County

~ Sip and Be Merry ~

You’ll know Spotsylvania County – or just Spotsy to its friends – when you get there. It’s the peaceful, mostly rural stretch drivers relax into once they’ve cleared the Northern Virginia congestion on I-95. Frowns unfurl, shoulders shake out, and windows roll down.

Four wineries dot the corners of the county: the two newcomers Wilderness Run, and Eden Try; the local favorite Mattaponi; and the veteran Lake Anna Winery, though to be sure, Lake Anna’s youthful exuberance and partying ways belie its elder statesman status.

Two breweries and a distillery also pull visitors from both north and south, including A Smith Bowman. The elegant distillery near Fredericksburg dates back to 1935, and offers free hourly tours Monday through Saturday.

Immersion into the county’s farm-to-table culture is easy, with the family-run Miller Farms Market’s seasonal produce, dairy and meat, and Spotsylvania Farmers Markets operating in two locations every Wednesday and Saturday. In the fall, Belvedere Plantation’s 645-acre heritage farm, established in the 1760s, opens its doors to the public with pumpkins, a children’s maze, a market and bakery.

Known as the "Crossroads of the Civil War," Spotsylvania County is especially rich in history. The County welcomes visitors to Civil War Historic Sites and Battlefields, including Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Court House and Wilderness. In the Spotsylvania Courthouse Historic District, the Historic Courthouse, Old Jail and Spotsylvania Museum are among the many scenic attractions

Lake Anna offers 13,000 acres of swimming, sailing, water-skiing and sport fishing. At the Lake Anna State Park, visitors and the community enjoy picnicking, horseback riding, bicycling, hiking/walking trails and camping. There are additional nature and outdoors sites, like the Ni River Reservoir and the Hunting Run Reservoir.

Stevenson Ridge is a great base for exploration (and very popular wedding venue).  The Inn includes nine private cottages from the 18th and 19th centuries, and 87 acres where you can explore Civil War trenches, fishing, and hiking.  Their Wine & Chocolate package may be just the thing for a romantic weekend.
