Rural Retreat's vineyards are 3,000 feet up, so owners Scott and Linda Mecimore have been focusing a lot of attention on cold-hardy grapes since they planted in 2008. If you're not up for experimentation, though, you can stick with Chardonnay, Riesling, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chambourcin, some of which are grown in nearby Pulaski. A number of sweet blends are also offered. The winery and tasting room are located in the middle of downtown Rural Retreat in two historic buildings. The buildings include a full-service deli with made to order sandwiches, specialty salads and homemade soups and desserts.

Rural Retreat is on Southwest Virginia's Round the Mountain Artist's Trail.
