In northern Amherst County, south of the constellation of wineries that surround Charlottesville, Rebec Vineyards has been quietly making wines for more than 20 years. Named after a medieval stringed instrument - a forerunner of the modern violin - the owners chose Rebec as their name because it represents their commitment to old-world craftsmanship in winemaking.
The small winery building features rich weathered chestnut siding and exposed beams from a 200-year-old tobacco barn, which was once on this historic farm.
Wines include Viognier, Gewurztraminer, sweet Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, the blends Autumn Glow and Sweet Sofia, plus Cherry and Pear fruit wines.
Each October, Rebec hosts the blowout Virginia Garlic Festival, featuring every garlic-related product known to man, five neighboring wineries, five stages of music and garlic cook-offs, and even a Garlic King and Queen.
Weddings, kids and pets welcome; picnic areas available; free tours.
