Pippin Hill opened its doors in July 2011 and the wine trail regulars descended immediately, like bees to honey.
Owner Dean Andrews (who knows a thing or two about luxury properties, as former COO of Orient Express) paints an exciting picture of the winery, including elegant weddings, a vegetable farm to supply ingredients for the house-made small plates, and fresh breads baking in the wood-burning oven (direct from Tuscany). There is plenty to like about Pippin Hill.
The spacious, elegant, barn-style tasting room with its walls of windows offers a choice of tasting spots: couches in the corner, high-top tables for two with a view, or the L-shaped tasting bar in the corner. On a nice day you'll have it to yourself, because everyone's outside, lounging on the covered wrap-around patio.
A high-ceilinged event room (called The Granary) is set with dozens of tables, swathed in tablecloths and topped with candles. A camera-wielding woman told us “I keep sending my daughter pictures of this place. I want her to get married here!"
Anyone would want to get married here. Even if you didn't want to get married, you might change your mind just to be married here
. Just be sure you have enough friends to fill the room, though; the oversized space holds up to 200.
Pippin Hill takes snacking well beyond cheese and sausage, promoting a "vineyard to table" menu, with seasonal ingredients that follow the cycle of locally produced agricultural products. Creative options when we visited included Tuscan White Bean Bisque, local salad greens, a cheese or charcuterie board, plus small plates featuring crab cake, Croque Monsieur, turkey burger, and even desserts.
Michael Shaps of Virginia Wineworks is the consulting winemaker. Currently, the winery is tasting Chardonnay, Viognier, Merlot, Cab Franc, Cab Sauvignon, plus one sparkling and one dessert wine.
The winery is friendly toward kids and dogs are welcome on the lawn and veranda, but not in the tasting room. Weddings and special events available, as well as parking for buses and RVs (groups must reserve in advance).
