The beautiful Otium Cellars, just outside Purcellville, opened in 2011. Like to try something a little different? You'll love it here.
In addition to Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, at the time of our visit, Otium Cellars was also growing Pinot Gris, and pouring Malbec in addition to those. But the real favorites are the estate grown Blaufraenkisch and Dornfelder, wines popular in the owners' German homeland. Otium is currently the only Virginia winery making Dornfelder, and we believe Notaviva Vineyards in Loudoun County and Ox-Eye Vineyards in Staunton are the only wineries also making Blaufraenkisch (although Ox-Eye calls it Lemberger). Austrian favorites Zweigelt and Gruner Veltliner are in the plans for future expansion.
Otium Cellars doubles as a horse farm specializing in Hanovarians, and if you're lucky you'll spot owner Max Bauer walking the beauties past the timbered tasting room.
Outside, picnic tables and lawn games are eclipsed by a spectacular pavilion with a massive fireplace at its center, bordered by cozy couches. This is the place. Truly.
Limos and buses call ahead for approval. Kids and pets welcome. Space for private events and weddings. Bring a picnic.
