Be sure to check out the My Story section of Hickory Hill's website, a lovely and visual accounting of the owner's 40 year history around Smith Mountain Lake, including some old photos of the Roanoke River damming and construction of the lake.
The generosity of the storytelling is emblematic of Hickory Hill's warm welcome, including these messages from their web site:
"Kids are always welcome here, and we have various toys and simple seasonal activities to help pass the time while mom & dad taste.
"In summer, flip-flops and cover-ups over bathing suits suit us just fine.
"Dogs on leash are warmly welcomed on the grounds and service dogs in the tasting room. We have a lengthy nature trail around the farm good for stretching 4 or 2 legs, but wear hiking boots and expect nature.
"Handicapped folks please come around to the back door to avoid stairs.
Tastings are complimentary, and tours "are as brief or long as you like." You've got to love the casual, come one-come all feeling of this place.
Enjoy a glass on the covered back porch, or the picnic area overlooking the vineyard (the winery carries some meats and cheeses for purchase); groups of 10 or more, please call ahead; private parties and weddings are welcome.
Wines include Chardonnay, Vidal Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and interesting blends like the sweet dark rose made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Vidal Blanc.
