There were only 40 wineries in Virginia when Hartwood opened its doors in 1989. The vineyard is even older, with planting starting in 1981; theirs is the first commercial vineyard in Stafford County.
Some wineries prohibit kids, some permit them (grudgingly, with a raft of rules), but few heartily encourage tot-toting, as Hartwood does. Pets are welcome as well.
A vast selection of wines includes a Chardonel/Rkatsiteli blend, a Seyval/Vidal Blanc, a rose' of Chambourcin, a Chambourcin/Niagara/Seyval Blanc blend, a Beaujolais style red from Chambourcin, a Claret from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and single varietal Petit Verdot and Tannat.
Hartwood is an easy 10-minute drive from I-95, and just another ten to historic Fredericksburg, which is a nice add-on for lunch after visiting the winery.
Private parties are welcome, including after-hours private tastings for up to 40 guests; picnics welcome, bring your own or buy cheese and crackers in the tasting room; pets welcome; group tours encouraged; bus and RV parking available.
