Grayhaven was just the ninth winery to be licensed in Virginia, and now produces 27 different kinds of wine. Four family members collaborate on the winemaking, as mealtime turns into "family blending" discussions.
The fifty-acre farm is surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, horse pastures and forests. A third-generation winery, Grayhaven began growing grapes way back (for Virginia) in 1978, and began bottling their own in 1995.
The tasting room maintains a simple decor, with space for four or so tasters at the small bar. A burbling fountain outside, amidst a naturalized garden setting, is a nice spot to savor a glass of mulled wine in cool weather.
Group tours welcome (call ahead), kids are kept entertained with an on-site playground, winery dogs, and horses. Dogs are welcome in the tasting room (with supervision) or off-leash anywhere on the grounds (except the horse's paddock or barn).
Looking for a wedding or event venue? How about one of these melodically-named locations: Vineyard Overlook, Lakeside Amphitheater, Dogwood Meadow, and Prancing Pony Pasture.
Grayhaven has a rolicking list of events that keep things hopping, including its very popular South African Wine Festival in the summer.
