Formerly known as Cooper Vineyards, the winery changed hands in 2015 and the name changed a few years later. Fifty-Third Winery is - you guessed it! - Virginia's 53rd winery.
The winery operates out of a stunning modern structure with 2-story glass walls, inside/outside tasting bars (plus a private tasting room), art exhibits in an upstairs gallery, and a huge deck overlooking the vineyards.
One of the most eco-aware wineries in the state, Fifty-Third is Platinum LEED-certified. The recycle/conserve message is everywhere - even in the 111 Navy Chairs on the deck (I had to look that one up).
Twenty-two acres of grapes grow on the estate, including Albarino, Cabernet Franc, Chardonel, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot, Vidal Blanc and Viognier. Future plantings will include Chamborcin and Vignoles. A second vineyard in Free Union in Albermarle County VA, part of the Monticello AVA, adds Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to the mix.
The winery has live music every Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 - 4:30 year 'round.
Bring your picnic baskets; pets are welcome; kids can quietly romp; RVs have a home. Private events and weddings available.
