Winery owner Dave Matthews (maybe you've heard of the Dave Matthews Band? Yep, that's the one) and craftsman William Johnson designed this gorgeous rustic-modern winery, with dozens of windows and skylights bringing in the piedmont view.
Join a tasting at one of the two bars, or take a seat and the tastes will be brought to you. Or bring your glass out onto the big, sunny deck off the back. Local artists' work brightens up the space.
The building is split into the tasting room above, from which you can peer through paneled glass floors into the wine production facility below, which is kept cool by being nestled into the side of a hill. Constructed from reclaimed wood fitted together with mortise and tenon joints, the timber frame tasting room is lined with south-facing windows and skylights, which facilitate full day lighting of the space.
No electricity is required to light the space in the summer. In the winter, the lights are only turned on once it gets dark outside, and the tasting room benefits from passive solar heating throughout the day as well.
Blenheim's goal is to bottle wine from single vineyards and small parcels to capture the distinct characteristics of each site, a practice they began with their first vineyard in 2000, and extended with their second in 2007.
The reasonably-priced wines include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Meritage, plus Chardonnay and Viognier and a beautiful dry Rose that pairs perfectly with a chilled gazpacho from garden veggies.
Blenheim is directly across from Trump Winery, if you're looking for a two-fer outing.
Reservations required for groups of 8 or more.
At the winery: Picnic areas with light snacks available; private parties accepted; kids welcome.
