At the end of your long climb to the top of Afton Mountain, you'll probably expect to find a cabin, or lodge, or eagle's nest maybe. So the Mediterranean-style winery buildings may cause a double take ("is THAT the winery?").

Inside, the surprises continue: it's as if you've entered a sumptuous living room, with high-beamed ceilings, elaborate chandeliers, and dramatic floor-to-ceiling drapes. And all that BEFORE you take in the spectacular, mountain-top view from the hillside deck.

With all there is to look at, it may take a minute to realize your glass hand is empty, but once you do, the busy tasting bar will serve up some nice wines, including a vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon from 30+-year-old vines.

Afton Mountain Vineyards is one of Virginia's first farm wineries. The original vines were planted in 1978.  Those blocks are still in production today, and they now grow a total of 15 varieties on 24 acres.

Groups of more than 6 require a pre-paid reservation. Snacks available; no buses, campers, or RVs unless previously arranged; pets are welcome at picnic tables or other outdoor spaces.

All wines are made from estate-grown fruit, and include Bollicine (brut sparkling), Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Mountain White (Vidal Blanc), Rose', Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Festa di Bacco (a Sangiovese-based "Super Tuscan" blend), Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Albarino, and a port-style wine called VDN.

In recent years, Afton Mountain Vineyards has added several nearby vacation-rental cottages, including four Vineyards Cottages, all with decks overlooking the vineyards, and the Owner's Cottage, a 2-bedroom getaway with cook's kitchen, big outdoor patio, and screened porch with outrageous views. All cottage stays include a complimentary tasting for two in the winery's tasting room.

Groups: All parties of 6 or more must call ahead for a pre-paid reservation. Small group tastings are held in the Sunroom, which overlooks the vineyard. No groups larger than 15. Last group tasting is at 1PM.
