Part of the blossoming Route 9 wine trail in Loudoun County, 8 Chains North opened to acclaim in mid-2010. This is a rare beginner that showed maturity right from the start, both in its wines, and in its appealing tasting room.
Housed in an old (renovated) barn, the large space is broken up into a variety of intimate seating areas. Outside, a brick patio looks out on the neighboring lawns and small farms. A fenced dog run opened in the summer of 2014, the first winery to offer such an over-the-top amenity in dog-crazy Virginia wine country.
The winemaker, part-owner Ben Renshaw, brings years of experience in working with Virginia wine both in the vineyard and in the barrel room. Current offerings include a couple of Bordeaux-style blends, a Merlot, and the popular LoCo Vino, a blend of Vidal Blanc and Traminette.
A light fare menu is available on weekends—Friday afternoon through Sunday—while quantities last. You can also pack your own picnic (no outside alcohol, as with all Virginia wineries).
8 Chains is happy to accommodate groups, buses and limousines, but only if a reservation has been made in advance. Reservations are required for 8+ people. No “party buses.”
Kid-friendly, private events and weddings welcome.
