Caret Cellars is a new west-of-the-Rappahannock River bookend to the numerous wineries that populate Virginia's Northern Neck. Located just north of Tappahannock on what's known as the Middle Peninsula, the winery happily fills in what has always been something of a no-man's land for wine travelers: it's well-sited to pick up Richmonders heading east to the Chesapeake Bay for the weekend, or NoVa denizens driving south to Virginia Beach.
Caret Cellars officially opened their tasting "space" in late 2015 - there's no tasting room, per se, yet - though they've been growing grapes since 2007 and selling to local wineries.
Their specialty is powerful reds, featuring Sangiovese and a Super Tuscan-style blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. At this writing they were also offering a Rose of the Sangiovese, along with a Chambourcin, Merlot, Chardonnay, and a sweet red blend of Chambourcin and Niagara. Also recently added is Caret Sunset, a blend of Sangiovese, Vidal Blanc, Chardonel.
Children and pets are welcome, as are picnics.
