There are many flavors of small wineries out there, and Stinson Vineyards is of the exceptional variety.

They tend seven varietals of Old World grapes in their modest 5-acre vineyard, where the closely-space vines and careful tending yield a meager but flavorful 2 ½ tons per acre. Winemakers Scott (father) and Rachel (daughter) Stinson supplement their harvest with other high-quality Virginia grapes, and are wise enough to receive guidance from Governor's Cup-winning winemaker Matthieu Finot from King Family Vineyards.

An architect by trade, Scott fashioned the sunny tasting room from an old three-car garage on the 12-acre property which, along with his winemaking practices, allow him to claim "garagiste" status, albeit with an American accent.

Dog lovers find Stinson Vineyards the way ducks find water; Stinson's is one of the few tasting rooms where dogs are welcome inside. The pooches sip water and sample treats of their own while their humans try out whatever's available from the winery's stock of Chardonnay, Cab Franc, Meritage, Tannat, Petit Manseng and various blends, plus an excellent Rose'.

The tasting room is fairly small but comfortable, and doubles as a unique farm store offering grass-fed beef, farm-raised pork and chicken, free-range organic eggs, local produce, and garden fresh herbs. An outside deck and lawn offers lots of options for hanging out or picnicking.

Kid friendly, pet friendly, private events welcome. Groups of 8 or more call 24 hours ahead for reservations and must arrive before 2PM.
