Formerly First Colony Winery, Thatch Winery changed owners and names in 2018. ("Thatch" refers to the authentic thatched roof that tops the tasting room.)
This centrally-located winery, just 10 miles from Charlottesville, features a Terrace Garden, two-tiered deck, and lawn for lawn games, outdoor ceremonies and receptions.
Inside, several rooms, including the Tasting Room, accommodate parties up to 120 guests.
Amish cheeses, sausage and a variety of crackers and snacks are available for purchase; groups of ten or fewer are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy it at the winery at no charge.
Best of all, Thatch is just down the drive from Michael Shaps Wineworks, so a visit makes a nice afternoon with minimal driving.
Groups of more than ten should contact the winery. Private parties welcome; bring your pets; bring your kids. Parking available for buses and RVs.
Wines have included Claret, a sweet red; Meritage; Chardonnay; Silver Doctor, a blend of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon; Port-style dessert wine; Zephyr, a white blend; Petit Manseng; and Totier Creek White, a sweet white.
