Hope that you get caught in the rain when you visit Chateau O'Brien, because watching the mist rise over the mountains, glass in hand, on the winery's big covered deck is better than the best massage you've ever experienced. Their excellent snacks - croissant sandwiches, charcuterie plates, grilled flatbreads and gourmet chocolates - are more than enough for an afternoon of relaxation.

Wines run the gamut, with something for every taste and wallet, from the always-exceptional Reserve and Late Harvest Tannats and Petit Verdot to the friendly and affordable Northpoint label whites. Apple wines show up in several interesting formats, including an apple rosé and a high-end apple ice wine. There's even a Tannat rosé.

Chateau O'Brien is one of the few wineries in Virginia licensed to sell in nearly every state, and shipping is free when you order 6 or more bottles.

Several wine tasting options are available, including Classic, Cellar Collection, and Private Reserve (by appointment only).

Groups of 8 or more must have an appointment. The winery also offers special events, including Library Tastings. Vertical Tasting, and Wine Dinners.

Be sure to check out the rest of the renovated old house, with its polished pine floors and cozy lounge with leather couches flanking a stone fireplace.

Photos on the winery website don't really do it justice. The owner has worked hard to make this a special place, and it shows.

Important to know: nobody under 21 allowed (including infants & toddlers), no pets, and no RVs (you'll never make the tight turn across the railroad tracks heading up the winery's drive), buses and limos by appointment.

Groups of 8 or more must have an appointment.
