Once upon a time in Virginia, wine tastings were free, and visiting wineries was a fun, cheap way to pass a summer afternoon. But someone leaked the secret (wasn’t us – swear), and tasting rooms – especially those near large urban centers – got as busy as a grape picker in September. Bridesmaids and girlfriend getaways and golf buddies and family reunions all found their way to the free pours, and winery-hopping as entertainment for the masses was born.
But fun seekers didn’t make the best wine buyers, and wineries had to protect their small case lots. Add to that the dawning realization that labors of love don’t buy a new crusher or put fuel in the tractor. Et voila.
We don’t begrudge wineries their tasting fees; wine folk work hard for their money. But we sure do love to see those magical words “Complimentary Tasting,” and we thought you might, too.
Special thanks to those wineries still holding on to the past, for reasons of their own. Raise a glass, with them, for free! (Though buying a bottle would be nice, too

Thanks for the list! Tasting fees add up so I am going to take advantage of this opportunity and finally get to some that I have on my list.
Happy Virginia Wine Month!

Every little bit helps, Lisa! We’re heading to 10 wineries on the Fauquier Wine Trail this weekend, and I’m wagering that we’ll come back with a full trunk and empty wallets!
We hand out free tasting cards all over the place and in our weekly emails. Bring one in, even one on your iphone and you get a….wait for it….FREE Tasting!
Cheers-
b.

Hi Brian! Great meeting you last night at the blowout at Barrel Oak! Thanks for the tip on how to score a free tasting – we sure do love app-ortunities like this
Just FYI, starting last weekend thru the middle of November, bring in 4 cans of food and get a full free tasting on us. The cans go to For Immediate Sympathetic Help (F.I.S.H.) suppporting Fauquier’s neediest families. If we did not charge for our tastings, there’s be no reason for people to bring in the canned goods. Last year we gave awaty $12,000 in tastings and collected over 50 boxes of food items; the largest single donation ever to FISH.
