“150 Wineries in 150 Days: Virginia” – Stop #4
There’s a map and more information at the page for Sunset Hills Vineyard.
Wow. Friends (originally from California) gave us a heads-up about this place when we told them about our upcoming winery tour. They said, and I quote: “We have a new favorite winery. It’s in Virginia. And you know how much it pains us to say that.”
Sunset Hills IS all that.
Taking pride of place smack in the middle of the vineyards is a huge, imposing red barn, circa 1870 (rebuilt by Amish barn-raising specialists, we were told by the owner, Diane). The umpty-thousand square foot structure is home to the four-sided tasting bar, lots of open space with little gifties for purchase, AND an open second-story balcony – roped off for use by Sunset Hills Wine Club members. (A nifty bit of exclusivity marketing, as are the “Pick Up Parties” the winery hosts every couple of months, where members pick up the bottles they are required to purchase as part of the Club.)

The owners grew grapes for years before the winery took shape – they wanted mature grapes to make wonderful wines, and they have a lot to show for their pre-planning. Lots of winners in the nine wines we tasted ($7 per person); we bought three bottles, which says it all. Reserve Chardonnay, Cab Franc, and Viognier.
Pick up snacks here (or bring your own), including a large gourmet food basket ($30 non members, $24 members) with warm French bread, cheese, meats and tapenade. Also available: turkey panini, Amish cheese plate, hot pretzels, and Amish fudge.
Lots of outside seating, on a sunny deck or at picnic tables on the shady lawn.
Love it!
Hours: Monday-Thursday 12-5pm; Friday 12-8pm; Saturday & Sunday 12-6pm.
